The Indianapolis Colts and running back Jonathan Taylor have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension worth $44 million. The deal, which can reach $47 million with incentives, includes $39 million in guaranteed money and keeps one of the NFL’s top running backs in Indianapolis for the foreseeable future.
Taylor’s relationship with the Colts had previously faced uncertainty after contract discussions became tense during the 2023 offseason, when he requested a trade before ultimately returning to the team. Indianapolis later reached a long-term agreement with him, and Taylor expressed his desire to remain with the franchise. Taylor’s new agreement reinforces the Colts’ commitment to a player who has become a central part of their offense. The three-time Pro Bowl selection is approaching a significant franchise milestone, sitting within reach of Hall of Fame running back Edgerrin James’ team rushing record. Since Indianapolis selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Wisconsin, Taylor has produced more than 3,000 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns over the past two seasons.
The extension also places Taylor among the highest-paid running backs in the league. The contract follows a recent trend of major investments at the position, including a lucrative extension for Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, as teams continue to reevaluate the value of elite playmakers in the backfield. Taylor’s average annual value of $22 million ranks among the top deals for NFL running backs.
